  • Debbie Miller, an Akron resident, finished her mission to pick up one million pieces of trash after starting in February 2023 when her dog was injured by broken glass. She collected 1,426 pieces of broken glass (along with needles, nails, bolts, screws, a dozen knives and even a gun) and was praised by Mayor Shammas Malik.  Cleveland 19 News
  • Council Member Phil Lombardo hosted a luncheon at Dontino’s on East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue this past Saturday to honor 10 North Hill elders who are centenarians and nonagenarians—collectively sharing 987 years of life experience. The guests, including World War II veterans and lifelong residents, shared stories of their long lives and family traditions.  Signal Akron
  • Don Matis Jr., known as the Jester for Jesus with his purple beard, has been sober for 39 years and now offers bar ministry and art to share hope in Akron + he turned his life around after leaving drugs and crime following a life-changing religious experience. CULTURE NEWS

  • Beacon Journal staff earned many awards at the All Ohio Excellence in Journalism competition held on June 6 at the House of Blues in Cleveland—Jeff Lange won four first-place awards, Nate Ulrich and reporters Anthony Thompson and Bryce Buyakie also claimed top honors, and Tawney Beans was praised for social media work—and the team topped 10 categories overall.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Paul Tazewell—an Akron native and Buchtel High School graduate—won the Tony Award for Best Costume Design in a Musical for 'Death Becomes Her' on Sunday following his Oscar win months earlier, and he became only the second person in history to earn both awards in the same calendar year.  WKYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that reverse discrimination suits in Akron-area institutions no longer require a higher burden of proof, a change that could let more majority members file claims. A former GOJO Industries employee and an Akron firefighter have filed lawsuits alleging unfair treatment — a shift that may lead to more such cases being heard in local courts.  Signal Akron
