COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Low-income families in Summit County can get a one-time $120 benefit for each eligible child for summer break through the SUN Bucks program—children on SNAP, OWF, Medicaid or free/reduced meals are automatically enrolled while others must apply online by Aug. 15. The benefit loads on an Ohio Direction Card and can be used at grocery stores and farmers markets.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron’s free Connect at the Rec teen program starts on June 27 at the Ed Davis and Joy Park Community Centers—where teens in grades 6 to 12 must register at the door until 6 p.m.—and runs on five Friday nights with open gym, arts and crafts, a live DJ, food, and local police plus fire officials engaging with youth.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Akron’s Citizens’ Police Oversight Board approved auditor Anthony Finnell’s recommendations after reviewing two incidents where officers repeatedly punched suspects—one involving a minor in late March and another during a traffic stop—actions he said violated department policy and require disciplinary review.  Signal Akron

  • Carrie Coon, a Copley native, will play Bertha Russell in HBO’s The Gilded Age, an eight-episode series that will debut on Sunday, June 22 on HBO and stream on Max.   • The City of Akron is asking residents for input on a new policy that guides how police handle large gatherings and demonstrations. The updated policy requires officers to allow assemblies to continue when safe and only use force when it is objectively reasonable—public comments will help shape the final version.  iHeartMedia
  • Akron officials announced that Summit Lake Community Center will extend its hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, Monday, June 23, and Tuesday, June 24—serving as a cooling center for residents as a heat wave with temperatures in the lower 100s approaches. Officials will monitor conditions and return centers to normal hours on Wednesday, June 25—ensuring public safety during extreme heat.  WKYC
