COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Several towns in northeast Ohio are set to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks displays scheduled Friday from 7:10 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. In Akron, residents will see fireworks at 9:45 p.m. at Lock 3 on Main Street (with other local spots to be announced).  Cleveland 19 News
  • Bill Hoover and Edward Lee Evans, longtime gay rights activists from Akron, will celebrate the 50-year anniversary of their dating on July 13 with a disco-themed party at Cocktails (the bar opens at 3 p.m. and food is served at 5). The couple, who met at a disco in Kenmore and fought for rights from Kent State to Los Angeles, mark decades of local activism and community impact (a milestone for their enduring relationship).  Akron Beacon Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, June 22, 2025, crews searched at Gorge Metro Park for a missing kayaker and a child along the Cuyahoga River—rescue teams had retrieved an overturned kayak near the Front Street bridge.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Akron City Council reviews a three-year pilot program called Right to Counsel—budgeted at $250,000 per year—to help low-income residents avoid eviction. If approved, the plan will begin on Sept. 1 and serve disabled adults 60 and older as well as households with children who are nearing eviction.  Signal Akron

  • Miguel Angel Jimenez and Steven Alker are leading the Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club, holding an 8 under score and a two-stroke advantage while playing in heat near the 90s.   • Miguel Angel Jimenez won the Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone South on Sunday by beating Steven Alker in a playoff with a 20-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole. He claimed his fourth PGA Tour Champions win of the season and secured a spot in next year's Players Championship — adding to his 17 career victories.  Cleveland 19 News
