COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Akron Zoo moved many animals indoors with air conditioning and added pools, fans and ice blocks to help them beat the heat as temperatures climb into the mid-90s. The zoo also closed its aquarium exhibits temporarily — letting the air conditioning catch up — and advised visitors to stay hydrated by using their indoor cooling areas.  Akron Beacon Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • First responders continued a recovery effort in Cuyahoga Falls after a father went missing Saturday when his raft overturned on the Cuyahoga River as he tried to save his 5-year-old son—whose body was found Sunday morning—while his family was tubing together.  News 5 Cleveland
  • On June 22, the body of a 5 year old boy was recovered from the Cuyahoga River after an inflatable device capsized on June 21—officials say search crews are still looking for his missing father.  Akron.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Akron police said 37-year-old Michael Whitecloud was found dead of a gunshot wound to his head Saturday night in a North Hill driveway—officers are actively investigating the case with no arrests reported.  Cleveland.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Akron City Council approved a $250,000 pilot program to help renters facing eviction by providing legal aid from Community Legal Aid—eligible renters must be within seven days of eviction and meet poverty guidelines, including families with minor children and disabled seniors. The program will start Sept 1 to reduce evictions and may boost tenant legal representation to 10%.  Signal Akron
