CRIME NEWS

  • Akron police investigated two separate weekend shootings that hospitalized a 23-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man with non-life-threatening injuries—one incident unfolded at a Summit Lake apartment parking lot on July 26 around 11:11 p.m., while the other occurred at a Vernon Odom Boulevard bus stop early July 27.  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On July 28, the Akron Public Schools board approved a three-year contract with the teachers union that gives 2,700 members (raising pay by 3%, 2%, and 3% while increasing health care costs by 8% for wellness program members and 14% for others) and is retroactive to July 1; union members had already ratified the deal before the board voted unanimously.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron Public Schools hired David Sipusic as its new in-house counsel at a salary of about $183,000 after the district spent over $1.2 million on outside legal services in fiscal year 2024—he brings more than 20 years of legal experience from local education and law firms. The board also named Wayne Bowers interim treasurer to take over on Aug. 1 after Steve Thompson resigned.  Signal Akron
  • Over 30 middle and high school students joined SWAG Culinary Camp run by Students with A Goal for three weeks to learn cooking skills and build resilience. The camp ended with a July 25 showcase at Goss Memorial Church where students prepared dishes like soup and tacos — explaining each dish's origins.  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Akron and Tallmadge officials said water was safe to drink, bathe, and cook with despite a musty or metallic odor—caused by algae blooms from recent hot weather and heavy rains. The city of Akron brought legislation on July 28 to purchase extra Jacobi Carbon, and treatment was underway as complaints declined.  Akron Beacon Journal
