- ➤ Akron police investigated two separate weekend shootings that hospitalized a 23-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man with non-life-threatening injuries—one incident unfolded at a Summit Lake apartment parking lot on July 26 around 11:11 p.m., while the other occurred at a Vernon Odom Boulevard bus stop early July 27. - ➤ On July 28, the Akron Public Schools board approved a three-year contract with the teachers union that gives 2,700 members (raising pay by 3%, 2%, and 3% while increasing health care costs by 8% for wellness program members and 14% for others) and is retroactive to July 1; union members had already ratified the deal before the board voted unanimously. - ➤ Akron Public Schools hired David Sipusic as its new in-house counsel at a salary of about $183,000 after the district spent over $1.2 million on outside legal services in fiscal year 2024—he brings more than 20 years of legal experience from local education and law firms.
