  • Twinsburg firefighters rescued an 8-month-old boy from a burning basement on Simsbury Drive Sunday afternoon—he was taken to University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center and is reported in good condition.  FOX 8

CRIME NEWS

  • Denzel Pope, a 20-year-old Akron man, was sentenced today to life in prison for fatally shooting Paige Calich in July 2024 as her child was nearby, and he will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.  Cleveland.com

  • Preston Stewart—a 62-year-old funeral director from Akron—dressed in a striking purple suit at a tribute concert held on July 26 in Highland Square and honored Prince by sharing lifelong memories of meeting him.  Signal Akron

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Akron Public Schools offer two distinct paths to graduation—Akron Early College High School for students earning college credit and Akron Alternative Academy for at-risk learners needing extra support.   • University of Akron law professor Michael Gentithes said a new grand jury process for fatal police shootings might help prevent future killings by letting jurors share more of their insight instead of just a binary vote—this change could lead to stronger oversight and accountability in reviewing police actions.  Signal Akron
