  • The third annual Akron City Festival will take place Sunday at Lock Three where a parade will open a day of fun that includes bouncy houses, face painting, and a three-on-three tournament. Akron Police will serve hot dogs as local partners gather—bringing residents together ahead of the new school year.  News 5 Cleveland

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A man who had been in the water overnight was rescued Sunday morning from the Tuscarawas River on W. Market Street when a couple on the Towpath Trail spotted him and firefighters—Canal Fulton Lawrence Township Fire Department reached him within five minutes to transport him to a nearby hospital for hypothermia concerns.  News 5 Cleveland
  • On Sunday morning, the state highway patrol looked into two fatal crashes on the Turnpike in Erie County when an International truck hit a tow truck and a Toyota Sienna hit a tractor-trailer, killing three people and injuring one driver; the road was closed for three hours—officials continue to investigate.  FOX 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • As Akron celebrates its bicentennial, local history is recalled with events from 1825 when the First Congregational Church of Tallmadge was dedicated, 1875 when undertaker H.D. Cole offered a child's hearse and died soon after, 1925 when rubber boss Harvey Firestone paid the highest city tax, 1975 when Mayer Investment Co. bought an old post office, and 2000 when deputies burned 500 pounds of marijuana near Akron-Canton Airport. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Akron teachers teamed up to address the lack of eye care by piloting a program that brings free exams and glasses to students who fail vision screenings—starting at Crouse elementary. They partnered with iSee Ohio and Dr. Laura Knight from Midwest Eye Consultants to help children in lower-income schools get the care they need.  Akron Beacon Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Sunday's Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic in Canton, about 3,223 fans watched Virginia Union beat Miles 45-3 in the biggest blowout and lowest attendance on record—local organizers said side events like tailgating, a gospel concert and a college fair supported regional tourism and local businesses. Officials noted the multi-day festivities celebrated HBCU pride and provided economic benefits for the area.  Cleveland.com
  • Kent State football ended a 21-game losing streak on Aug 30 when interim coach Mark Carney led the team to a 21-17 win over Merrimack. The university will hold a national coaching search after the season—Carney is under contract until Jan. 15 and the team is expected to face tough challenges as underdogs in upcoming games.  Akron Beacon Journal
