ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Portage County sheriff said foul play was not suspected after an Akron man jumped from a 20-foot ledge into the water at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park over Labor Day weekend—lifeguards began CPR before he died at a hospital and authorities continue investigating the incident.  Akron Beacon Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Families in Akron brace for fewer SNAP benefits this fall as new work requirements may cut aid for veterans, youth aging out of foster care and homeless persons — groups previously exempt. The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank already faced state and federal funding cuts and expects more families will soon need food help.  News 5 Cleveland

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Founded 25 years ago in a basement, SUPER Learning Center in Lakemore now serves 150 K-12 students with special needs and employs 60 staff— it will host a silver jubilee celebration on Oct. 11 to mark its growth.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The city of Akron and community partners are spending $950,000 on a 12-month pilot program called the Unified Early Learning System — a project that will help childcare centers and teachers while giving families better early education. The program will give providers training, tools, and support to lower staff turnover and boost enrollment during the pilot.  Cleveland.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An editorial from the Akron Beacon Journal warns that federal budget cuts have forced Cuyahoga Valley National Park to reduce staff and close restrooms, which may delay maintenance and impact visitor services. Lawmakers are urged to act before the current fiscal year ends on Sept. 30—this support may help protect local jobs and the local economy.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Akron Children's Hospital pharmacist Kyle Finnerty said H.B. 12 would let patients request untested treatments by removing scientific safeguards and putting kids at risk. He warned that if the bill passes, careful care may suffer and experienced pharmacists could soon leave—jeopardizing safe care.  Akron Beacon Journal
