  • Food pantries in Kent and Ravenna have seen a sharp rise in clients needing food help amid economic hardship — with many facing job losses and reduced SNAP benefits. Officials at Axess Family Services urge the community to donate essentials like canned vegetables, peanut butter, and pasta to support the growing demand.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Cavaliers forward Larry Nance Jr. will serve as a Swensons server from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13 at West Akron Swensons—40 S. Hawkins Ave—to raise funds for Akron Public Schools. He will match every donated dollar as Swensons donates 20% of sales while guests contribute school supplies.  Akron Beacon Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A Mogadore man was sentenced by a Cleveland judge to 12 years in prison after federal agents linked his social media accounts to the distribution of sexually explicit photos of children — images shared from January 9th to May 21st, 2024.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • A Virginia woman who pleaded guilty to driving more than 300 miles to meet a Cleveland man at Cuyahoga Valley National Park and shooting him in March 2021 was sentenced by a federal judge on Tuesday to 22½ years in prison — she will also serve five years of supervision — after federal agents linked her directly to the crime.  FOX 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today the Cleveland Fed runs its FedFutures four-year paid internship program—giving high school students real-world financial lessons, job shadowing, and hands-on work experience. One participant from Akron said the program taught him budgeting and networking skills not offered in regular classes, and applications will open in February.  News 5 Cleveland

  • Nine-year-old Jerick MayRobb from Columbiana County, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, threw the first pitch at Sunday's Akron Rubber Ducks game—140 Akron Children's families watched—and his milestone highlights the hope offered by groundbreaking gene therapy.  FOX 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 23rd Akron Marathon is scheduled for Sept. 27 with an opening ceremony at 6 a.m. at the Akron Art Museum and a finish near the Civic Theatre, featuring a new course designed for a smoother start—runners will pass through South Akron, Firestone Park and the University of Akron. Pre-event activities include a Health and Fitness Expo and a Kids Fun Run on Sept. 26 with registration closing Sept. 21 as part of Akron’s Bicentennial celebrations featuring Olympic gold medalist Butch Reynolds.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron native Mike Fox, a North High School graduate who played college football at West Virginia and won a Super Bowl with the Giants, will be inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 7 at the Bank at East End—his journey from a hospital stay that sparked his football dream led him to a notable NFL career.
