- ➤ Councilman Johnnie Hannah said local Black community leaders (and other civic groups) stepped in after Mayor Shammas Malik canceled the parade due to threats, and the parade ran successfully with a shortened route. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ Council President Margo Sommerville will distribute 100 free backpacks filled with school supplies at Helen Arnold Community Learning Center in Akron on Sept. 20 from noon to 4 p.m.—the event is on a first-come, first-served basis. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ Akron Zoo will host its reimagined Halloween event—Boo at the Zoo: Ultimate Fall Fest—on three consecutive weekends in October (October 11—12, October 18—19, and October 25—26) with themed areas, trick-or-treating, and family-friendly activities for visitors of all abilities. A special accessible event, Zoothing Boo at the Zoo, will take place at 10 a.m. on October 25 while non-food options will be available for guests with allergies. Cleveland.com

- ➤ A Cuyahoga Falls resident won $150,000 on an Ohio Lottery scratch ticket purchased at GTB Petroleum on E. Main St. in Kent on Sept 12 — after paying 28% in taxes the prize will be $108,000. Akron Beacon Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Akron City Council postponed a vote on the future of the 115-year-old Firestone Plant #1 for another 15 days—citing the need for more input and weighing whether preserving the iconic clock tower can outweigh demolition costs. Local officials and community members are now set to explore further preservation options before making a final decision. Signal Akron
- ➤ Ohio will lower the age for senior fishing and hunting license discounts from 66 to 65 on Sept. 30 — reducing the cost for hunting licenses from $19 and fishing licenses from $25 to $10 and saving seniors about half a million dollars annually. State Rep. David Thomas said the measure passed unanimously after a constituent raised the issue — a change signed by Gov. Mike DeWine. Akron Beacon Journal

- ➤ Kent State fell short in a 31-28 loss at Dix Stadium against Buffalo, but redshirt freshman Dru DeShields impressed interim coach Mark Carney and was named the starting quarterback.
