CULTURE NEWS

  • The Akron Art Museum will open the exhibit Alfred McMoore: All This Luck in My Head Saturday to show large scrolls that capture the local artist’s detailed funeral scenes and daily life, and the display will run through Feb. 8. A preview party on Sept. 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. will feature a talk by Jim Carney — a tribute to McMoore’s unique legacy.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Akron Public Schools suspended Facility Services Department Director Steven Keenan after he traded in 11 district lawn mowers for new ones and listed five for sale on Facebook Marketplace—Keenan now faces possible termination.  iHeartMedia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal appeals court ruled on September 16 that Ohio can ban green card holders and foreign nationals from donating to statewide ballot campaigns without violating the First Amendment. The decision, which reverses a lower court ruling and sends the case back for further review, supports the 2024 law aimed at election integrity+ Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose celebrated the ruling for protecting national sovereignty.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Akron native Lamar Sperling, former 2022 Ohio Mr. Football from Archbishop Hoban, is serving as a backup running back at University at Buffalo and helped his team secure a close MAC win against Kent State—he is focused on earning more playing time after recovering from a high-ankle sprain.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Barberton won its first game on the road at Clifford Stadium by beating Cuyahoga Falls 35-6, with Angelo Gotto running for 223 yards and scoring a touchdown, and the team's record dropped to 1-3. Manchester remained undefeated after beating Canton South 35-17 by taking a 21-10 halftime lead and allowing just one second-half touchdown.  Akron.com
