COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Barberton will host its annual Mum Festival Saturday, Sept. 27 to Sunday, Sept. 28 around Lake Anna with 17,000 mums in a 'Catch the Buzz. Bee There' theme and family activities planned. City officials have partnered with Rubber City Reuse—who will compost the mums after the event—to support eco-friendly practices.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Akron-Summit Public Library will host a free talk on Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at its Richfield branch with local author Jonathan Walter who will discuss his time-travel thriller —The Towpath— inspired by legends from the Cuyahoga Valley and Great Lakes areas.  Cleveland.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Akron native and Oscar, Tony and Emmy-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell visited Kent State University on Sept. 18—and he mentored fashion design students by critiquing their zero-waste garment designs. He urged the students to work with purpose using lessons from his local arts background and Broadway career.  Signal Akron

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Sept. 22 meeting, Akron City Council voted 11-0 to approve a certificate of appropriateness to demolish the historic Firestone plant at 1200 Firestone Parkway if no viable redevelopment plan is presented within 60 days — council members emphasized efforts to preserve the landmark before demolition proceeds.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over 85,000 bags of shrimp from Kroger have been recalled due to potential cesium-137 contamination, as the FDA noted the products were sold between June 12 and Sept. 17. Consumers with affected shrimp are urged to return them for a refund + call 18003313440 for more details.  FOX 8
  • The FDA recalled more than 150000 pounds of frozen shrimp sold at Kroger and other stores from June 12 to September 17 because they may be contaminated with radioactive cesium137, a substance that can cause burns and cancer+ Akron shoppers are urged to check their freezers and return the product for a refund.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • The new USA Today Network Ohio High School Football Super 25 Poll released as OHSAA Week 6 begins shows four Akron-area teams in the top 25 and two just outside the list—Massillon upset St. Edward to claim the No.1 spot.
