Good morning, Akron. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 24th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday morning, power outages struck Summit and Portage counties, leaving nearly 7,000 customers without power until restoration efforts reduced that number to 2,500 while Trumbull County still had about 400 affected. Kent State University closed its main campus due to the outage, and FirstEnergy is still working to restore power without a set timeline.  FOX 8
  • Akron’s Wallhaven mixes retail, residential, and green space where West Market Street & West Exchange Street & Hawkins Avenue meet, offering choices from chain stores like ALDI to longtime staples like Acme Fresh Market and small businesses. Hardesty Park hosts community events that bring residents together while local concerns about traffic and overdevelopment continue to shape neighborhood life.  Signal Akron

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.S. News & World Report released its 2026 college rankings yesterday — showing that the University of Akron ranked 373 nationally and Kent State ranked 232 — and the list also features other Ohio schools alongside top institutions like Princeton. Detailed rankings in categories such as nursing and engineering help families compare college options.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron Public Schools Interim Treasurer Wayne Bowers warned the school board on Sept. 22 that rising expenses outpacing revenue could lead to a $13.3 million cash deficit by June 2028 if no changes are made. He recommended immediate reforms—such as reducing overtime and reviewing contracts—as the district faces a federal funding appeal over the cancelled GEAR Up grant that may cut $1.2 million this year.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Akron school board asked local, state and federal officials to investigate former APS Facilities Director Steve Keenan for flipping district mowers after he resigned on September 17 amid allegations he bought and resold them at more than double their trade-in value — the board amended its resolution on September 22 to refer the case to law enforcement, the state auditor, the ethics commission and the IRS. Keenan denies wrongdoing and said he was retaliated against for filing complaints about the former superintendent.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new law banning police citation and arrest quotas will take effect on Sept 30th when officers will no longer be required to hit ticket targets set to help balance department budgets—state lawmakers and major police unions supported the measure. Officers can now report any remaining quota practices to the Attorney General’s office.  Cleveland 19 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Akron Children's Hospital doctor Eric Ligotski will present a study that found a dramatic rise in accidental cannabis ingestion among children—cases in kids under age 6 increased from 47 to 612 and overall exposures went from 313 to 1,417 between 2018 and 2024. The research will be shared at the American Academy of Pediatrics convention on Sept. 28 in Denver to guide safer practices.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Luke Floriea, a local training camp favorite from Mentor High and Kent State, was re-signed to the Browns' practice squad on Sept. 23—he had been cut earlier in preseason due to a hamstring injury and the team waived defensive end K.J. Henry.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron-area high school teams will take part in 19 OHSAA games on Friday, Sept. 26 and two on Saturday, Sept. 27. The key game at Dowed Field — with unbeaten Walsh Jesuit facing one-loss Archbishop Hoban — serves as an early playoff preview.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Local voters can help choose the Akron-Area High School Athlete of the Week for Sept. 15-21 in an online contest featuring standout local performers—votes close at 5 p.m. Sept. 25 and winners will be announced Friday morning.  Akron Beacon Journal
