COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The childhood street where fallen officer Jacob Derbin grew up was renamed on Belmont Drive at the border of Brooklyn Heights and Seven Hills. Derbin was fatally shot while on duty in May 2024—his family said the dedication honors his brave service and lasting legacy to the community.  WKYC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Megan Oyster — a retired teacher, robotics coach, and engineering liaison — opened BigFrog printing at 4210 Hudson Drive in Stow in September and now runs a franchise that makes custom apparel and items. She and her daughter have already partnered with local groups and will sell T-shirts at a Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy football game on Oct 10 to support Coach Muk, who was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer in July.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Bounce Innovation Hub in downtown Akron held a silent auction that ended Thursday night and sold two Goodyear Blimp tickets to an anonymous buyer for $15,100 — the fundraiser supports local entrepreneurs and economic growth. Goodyear’s website states that blimp rides are not available for sale as the company redirects public interest toward helping nonprofits.  FOX 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio State University will offer free tuition for students from families earning less than 100000 at its regional campuses starting next fall plus students can finish their degree locally or transfer to the main campus. The new plan may affect nearby public colleges that depend on these families for enrollment and funding.  Signal Akron

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Akron called for proposals to preserve the front bay of historic Firestone Plant #1 with a $5 million minimum price, and developers must submit ideas by Oct 27 for a winner to be chosen by Nov 12—any project must complete before demolition of the back property begins in March. The call focuses on adaptive reuse of the space, including the clock tower.  Signal Akron
  • Ohio will soon use cryptocurrency for state fees for services such as business filings and motor vehicle registrations—customers will pay a fee like a credit card charge. Secretary of State Frank LaRose and the State Board of Deposit chose Grant Street Group as the vendor to handle the payments.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Akron Children’s Hospital will open Akron Children’s Pediatrics Cuyahoga Falls on Sept. 30 at 1625 Portage Trail—serving both existing Pediatrics of Akron patients and new ones with 20 exam rooms, ample parking, and access to pediatric specialists. The office will ensure a smooth transition for current patients by automatically transferring records and providing a convenient care option near the new Cuyahoga Falls Middle/High School.  Cleveland.com

  • The Ohio high school football season continues this weekend with Akron-area teams playing on Friday and today at set times, including Saturday games kicking off at 2 p.m. Live score updates will be provided throughout the night—keeping local fans informed.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Helen McWilliams, a Cuyahoga Falls mother known for her unique race costumes, will run her 15th Akron Marathon today to honor her son George who died unexpectedly earlier this year. The race starts at 7 a.m. in Downtown Akron and will include a tribute at Mile 4 with banners and posters—her way to support others facing loss.  News 5 Cleveland
