BUSINESS NEWS

  • RubberDucks and 7 17 Credit Union have teamed up to rename Canal Park as 7 17 Credit Union Park for next season. The credit union will invest $50 million in Akron—opening new branches and offering a team credit card that helps fund local scholarships.  Signal Akron
  • Tandoori Kabobs is a Northern Indian takeout near the University of Akron that serves over 60 dishes including tandoori chicken, paneer tikka masala, and lamb seekh kabobs—this restaurant at the corner of Thornton and Grant streets operates Tuesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and accepts online orders.  Akron Beacon Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study by GOBankingRates examined 50 small towns to see how far a $100,000 income goes and found that several Ohio towns—such as Mogadore and Bluffton—offer over $30,000 in annual leftover savings after costs are met. The study used ADP’s Salary Paycheck Calculator to measure take-home pay against local living expenses.  FOX 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Akron voters will hear eight candidates answer questions live during the school board debate today at noon from Quaker Station in downtown Akron—local journalists from the Akron Beacon Journal, Ideastream and Signal Akron will moderate the discussion. The debate will last about 90 minutes as voters learn about the candidates' plans amid challenges like a budget shortfall and major building projects.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Eight school board candidates answered four key questions about their connection to Akron Public Schools, qualifications and plans to address challenges like funding and teacher shortages ahead of the Nov. 4 election—responses provided in their own words offer a clear view of their vision for the district.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Three seats on the Kent City School Board will be decided in the Nov. 4 election and four candidates—two incumbents and two challengers—are running for the positions. Incumbent Tiera Moore is not on the ballot and the district will have at least one new board member next year.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lakewood and Barberton filed a joint motion with the Public Utilities Commission to hold FirstEnergy accountable for repeated power outages that have threatened public safety—residents and businesses have reported food spoilage and health issues due to the interruptions.  News 5 Cleveland

HEALTH NEWS

  • Akron Children's Hospital partnered with the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors to launch the SOAR program at its Adult and Pediatric Burn Institute in summer 2025—designed to connect burn survivors and their families with trained peer supporters. The program will train these supporters and use donations from Janet Tussing to support long-term recovery.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Frank Williams championed the posthumous induction of his friend Virgil Brown into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 7—he will be honored with his own induction into the Akron Public Schools Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 18 at Guy's Party Center.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • High school football week 8 in Akron features many games on Friday, Oct. 10 — including matchups such as Glenville at Hoban, Woodridge at Norton, Roosevelt at Highland, Revere at Barberton, Copley at Cuyahoga Falls, Manchester at Triway, Louisville at Green, Springfield at Coventry, Notre Dame Cathedral Latin at CVCA, Highland at Roosevelt, and Walsh Jesuit at Ursuline.
