- ➤ Tomorrow, the City of Akron will host the 11th annual Blue Heron Homecoming Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Water Reclamation Facility on Akron-Peninsula Road—this free, zero-waste event will feature a 5K run, guided tours and live music while highlighting improvements in clean water that have brought back local blue herons. - ➤ Trick-or-treat events in Greater Akron are scheduled with Akron hosting its event from 5—7 p.m. on Oct. 25 while many nearby communities hold theirs on varying dates through Nov. 1. The list covers towns in Summit, Medina, Portage, and Stark counties where local organizers set different times for Halloween. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ On September 16, Gladman’s fence was damaged during an Akron Police chase when officers pursued a woman riding a bike, leaving her feeling unsafe for over a year. Contractors Jacob Pridgen and Osikena Okolo (owners of Brotherhood Enterprise Inc.) rebuilt the fence for free in one day, restoring her sense of security. News 5 Cleveland
- ➤ Bryan Needham leads a tour of the renovated Reservoir Park in Goodyear Heights — highlighting its new design features — to show local residents what has been updated. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ Summit Fresh Mobile Market, a grocery store on wheels run by a local nonprofit, will launch on Oct 11 at Reach Opportunity Center in Akron from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—it will offer $15 grocery vouchers, accept SNAP once the shutdown ends, and provide coupons to the first 25 fathers with a child under 1 while delivering fresh produce, meats, dairy and other food to local neighborhoods in need. - ➤ Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. today for Dancing with the Stars: Live! tour at Akron Civic Theatre next year, where performers will show routines from season 34 and new stage numbers. The 74-date tour launches on Jan. 22 and will bring a live show experience—focusing on popular TV talent—to Akron. Cleveland.com
- ➤ Akron will host the inaugural Oatmeal Festival tomorrow, Oct. 11 at Cascade Locks Park (57 W. North Street) as part of its bicentennial celebration honoring Ferdinand Schumacher, the Oatmeal King who popularized oatmeal in the mid-19th century. The free festival will offer live performances, food trucks and art displays that reflect the city’s rich food history. Akron Beacon Journal

- ➤ Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro delivered her seventh State of the County Address Oct. 1 at the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron and highlighted progress in the polymer industry, a planned research facility at the University of Akron, and sewer service upgrades in New Franklin, Copley, and Peninsula (the event is sponsored by the Akron Press Club to benefit local journalism scholarships). She also spoke on affordable housing, mental health support, and job programs while urging residents to vote on local ballot issues (Issue 1 for public safety and Issue 2 for responsible tax reform). - ➤ Akron native LeBron James will miss the Lakers' regular season opener on Oct.21 because of sciatica on his right side—he is expected to be sidelined for three-to-four weeks and his recovery will be re-evaluated after that time. Akron Beacon Journal
