  • At Oakwood Cemetery on Oct. 11, Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Walters spoke as Marine Sgt. Harold M. Weaver was laid to rest—he died in Okinawa in 1945 during World War II.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The world's first billionaire left a legacy in Northeast Ohio through gifts that now help fund schools, hospitals, and other local programs—his estate will support these projects moving forward.  Cleveland 19 News
  • Summit Fresh mobile market launched a grocery store on wheels to serve food desert areas in Summit County—helping residents who struggle with high gas prices and limited grocery access. It made its first stop yesterday in the Summit Lake neighborhood and will operate Monday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with plans to add more days soon.  News 5 Cleveland

FINANCE NEWS

  • An Akron resident won the $300,000 top prize in the 'Feeling Lucky?' scratch-off game when the ticket was purchased at Acme Fresh Market on West Market Street—after taxes, the winner will receive $218,625. A $50,000 winning ticket in the Bingo 50X game was sold at Stop Liquor on South Arlington Street and its prize is set to be $36,437.50 after taxes.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • No one won the $575 million jackpot on Oct 10 as many Ohio players received smaller prizes. The next Mega Millions drawing on Tuesday, Oct 14 at 11 p.m. will feature a $600 million jackpot with a cash option of $277.2 million—lottery officials say the odds have improved.  WKYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Akron-area stores are taking intoxicating hemp drinks off shelves because the governor set a 90-day ban that will start on Oct. 14—Mustard Seed Market & Café is marking down its THC drinks while Crafty Steere will pause sales until the ban is lifted.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • A report from the Center for Marketing and Opinion Research shows Summit County residents said violent crime, gun violence and local government problems were their biggest issues, with many also unhappy about job opportunities and housing costs. The survey showed nonprofits and police earned more trust while Akron residents rated police much lower than those in the suburbs + overall quality of life dropped to near record lows.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Akron coach Joe Moorhead said his team did not take advantage of key plays in its MAC loss to the Miami RedHawks.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • College athlete Sumayyah Kemp was honored at the Cavs’ 4th Annual Wine & Gold Gala at Rocket Arena when Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell announced that her tuition would be covered for the rest of the year and the team donated $20,000 to Beat the Streets Cleveland. Kemp—an alum of John Hay High School who joined Delaware State University’s inaugural women’s wrestling team—said the recognition inspires her to give back to the community.  News 5 Cleveland
