- ➤ The historic Highland Hill Building at Rhodes Avenue and Colfax Place in West Hill now houses Akorn Vintage and a mobile coffee kiosk from Here We Go! Coffee. Watershed Community School has opened a second storefront in the building — adding more local services for the community. Signal Akron
- ➤ Residents in East Akron are working to improve their neighborhood with local programs at Joy Park Community Center and food pantries amid challenges like broken sidewalks and few local businesses — the Akron Documenters are featuring daily profiles of neighbors' efforts through October. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Akron marked its bicentennial in 2025 by looking back at local history—events include a young girl found wandering in the woods in 1825, a canceled professor appointment in 1875, a Catholic protest march in 1925, a speech by Maureen Reagan in 1975, and a police award in 2000. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Akron community members gave input for a reimagined North High School, asking for sports fields, green space, and improved air quality. Architects from Hasenstab and Moody Nolan are in the community engagement phase (running from September to November) as they plan a design that will lead to a school completed in March 2029. - ➤ Bridges Learning Center in Akron helps 102 students with special needs learn academic, social and behavioral skills to return to their home schools. - ➤ Four candidates are running for three seats on the Norton Board of Education in the upcoming election. Candidate Elisa Staats—a family lawyer with school board experience and a teacher’s spouse with a child at Norton Middle School—said she will work to boost test scores and improve school safety. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Preliminary results from the Ohio Division of Wildlife show Lake Erie’s 2025 walleye hatch is rated Exceptional—this means over 20 million young fish are expected to reach legal size by their third summer in 2027. - ➤ In Northeast Ohio, 1,192 people are waiting for life-saving organ transplants even though donor registration is increasing—leaving a critical shortage of available organs.
