- ➤ Summit County Animal Control in Akron has lowered its dog adoption fee to $28 – from the regular $94 – during the Barktober promotion that runs through Oct. 31; the promotion includes essential care services for each dog and interested residents can visit the facility on Opportunity Pkwy. - ➤ Akron is preparing for a No Kings protest organized by Indivisible on October 18 (1–3 p.m.) at the John F. Seiberling Federal Building (2 S. Main St.). Protesters will gather to oppose federal actions including ICE raids and alleged abuses of power. Akron Beacon Journal

- ➤ Forty schools in Akron City School District and 865 teachers were honored with the Governor’s Thomas Edison Awards for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research—an honor given to 76 Ohio schools and 1,244 educators. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine plans to ask the federal government for a waiver to stop SNAP benefits from buying sugary drinks as part of a push to improve public health. - ➤ The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its Week 9 football computer ratings Tuesday to help decide which teams will qualify for the state playoffs on Oct. 26. The ratings cover 708 schools (72 in Division I and 106 each in Divisions II to VII) and will be updated weekly until the season ends (with state finals scheduled for early December).
