COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Akron Zoo is refreshing its annual Boo at the Zoo event by renaming it Boo at the Zoo: Ultimate Fall Fest with extra games, meet and greets, candy, and an adults-only Oktoberfest area (which includes seasonal snacks like apple nachos and corn on the cob). The event runs this weekend and next from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (families can still enjoy costumes and trick-or-treating with the animals).  News 5 Cleveland
  • On October 18th, protesters gathered near the John F. Seiberling Federal Building on Main and Market streets for the No Kings rally — they marched and held signs to voice their concerns.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Humane Society of Summit County will hold its Illuminate+Celebrate Open House on November 15 at 732 W. Portage Trail in Akron to mark the first anniversary of its new shelter with light refreshments, adoptable pets, waived adoption fees for animals 6 months or older from Nov 14–16, and a pet blessing. Additional charity events include Equity in Place on October 23 at House Three Thirty+Kitten Krazy CATsino Night on November 22 at Medina County Community Center featuring gaming, raffles, and a buffet dinner.  Akron Beacon Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Akron soft drink maker Norka Beverage Co. saw online sales surge after its soda was featured in the Peacock series The Paper and will soon appear on NBC starting Nov. 10 — company owner Michael Considine said he signed a release to ship cases to Universal in California, and he expects future cameo appearances in the show. The brand, revived in 2015, is sold at local stores and may gain further exposure as filming resumes.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Many fun events are scheduled in Akron and nearby towns from today through Oct 26. Highlights include an art exhibit at Peg’s Gallery in Hudson, a live concert at Akron Civic Theatre, and a free history hike at Richfield Heritage Preserve—more shows in Cleveland and other cities round out the calendar.  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Residents from the Cuyahoga Falls and Stow-Munroe Falls school districts will attend a moderated candidate forum on Oct. 21 at Akron main library from 6 to 7:45 p.m.—the forum will allow candidates to answer identical questions and share their visions for local education.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Summit County ADM Board is seeking a 2.95 mill levy renewal and a 0.5 mill increase on the Nov. 4 ballot to support mental health and addiction services amid rising demand after the pandemic. The added revenue of about $9.2 million will help sustain programs and fund a new transitional care facility on Sagamore Road — now expected to open in April.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • City officials toured the historic Firestone Plant 1 in Akron on Oct. 14—examining its 1910 factory and office that showed broken windows, scattered debris, and signs of decay. The tour included maintenance staff, engineering technicians, a police officer, and a contractor who discussed the building’s condition and plans for remediation.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Jerry Jeudy will face his old college teammate Tua Tagovailoa when the Browns host the Dolphins as both teams try to win after tough losses. Jeudy said the lesson—stay focused—that he learned in college helps him deal with his struggles while Tagovailoa recovers from injuries and criticism.  Akron Beacon Journal
