COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Akron children will trick-or-treat on Oct. 25 from 5-7 p.m. Local officials report that nearby towns have scheduled events on various dates—many on Oct. 31 and some as late as Nov. 1.  News 5 Cleveland
  • Akron officials celebrated the launch of Summit Fresh Mobile Market on Oct. 11, where a mobile grocery truck offered fresh produce, meat and pantry goods. The initiative, supported by local and national partners + funded by a $175,000 USCM award, helps bring healthier food choices to underserved areas.  Akron.com
  • The Salvation Army of Summit County will honor local leader William ‘Bill’ Wooldredge with the top civic award and Ebony Yeboah-Amankwah with the Community Award Medal at the annual luncheon and Red Kettle Kickoff on Nov. 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Copley Township — the event will launch the Red Kettle Campaign to support nearly 700,000 essential services throughout Summit County.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • FirstEnergy and Community Legal Aid are hosting a free wills and estate planning clinic on Nov.20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ohio Means Jobs Center—1040 E.   • A retired truck driver in Ravenna won $50,000 on an Ohio Lottery scratch-off ticket purchased at Get Go on East Main Street—lottery officials said he continues a family tradition as both of his parents had also won big prizes and he takes home $36,437.50 after taxes.  FOX 8

  • NFL star Travis Kelce, a Cleveland Heights native, joined an investment group including JANA Partners that acquired a 9% stake in Six Flags, the operator of Cedar Point and Kings Island.   • Six Ohio cities earned spots on America’s 100 Best Cities ranking with Columbus at No. 33 for its growing workforce and affordable housing, while Cleveland and Cincinnati were noted for homeownership and economic strength respectively. Akron ranked No. 84 due to its rich history and innovation projects such as the $42 million Bowery District project—this highlights its competitive edge as statewide development continues.  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters in Summit County will decide on property tax levy proposals on Nov. 4 to help schools manage rising costs. Tallmadge seeks to renew a 7.5 mill levy and add a new 5.7 mill levy while Springfield and Cuyahoga Falls propose renewals, with Cuyahoga Falls’ renewal costing about $218 per $100k (and Jackson voters facing a substitute levy costing about $119 per $100k) to generate essential funds.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Lawmakers debated healthcare reforms on Oct. 22 that may leave thousands unable to afford coverage, raising concerns for Akron locals about access to care+ officials warn that the changes will likely increase health costs in the coming months.  Cleveland 19 News

  • Lukity’s Country Inn at 2697 Manchester Road in Akron has served homestyle meals using family recipes since 1979. The family-owned restaurant offers comfort food dinners—like meatloaf and chicken soup—and an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet on weekends.  Akron Beacon Journal
