- ➤ The Akron Public Art Commission finished its first round of art on traffic control boxes and is now calling on local artists to submit designs for round two to turn traffic signals into vibrant public art—submissions are due by Nov. 9. - ➤ Akron Zoo euthanized Tamarr, a 20-year-old lion suffering from chronic kidney disease—he was the second-oldest captive lion at the zoo; he arrived in 2007 from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. - ➤ Many Halloween events will take place across Northeast Ohio in the coming weeks as the Akron Zoo hosts its Boo event on Oct 26 with family fun like pumpkin bowling and trick-or-treating and haunted attractions including Bloodview Haunted House in Broadview Heights, Carnival of Horrors and Factory of Terror in Canton, and a haunted schoolhouse in Akron. - ➤ Downtown Akron business owners say that ongoing street and sidewalk closures due to major construction are hurting sales and slowing foot traffic. Ed Sutter, owner of Eddie’s Famous Cheesesteaks on South Main Street—where a blocked sidewalk and closed Bowery Street have forced longer detours—said he is waiting for a response from city officials about a safer pedestrian route. - ➤ The Akron-Summit County Public Library bought the former Rite Aid building at 1540 Canton Road and will move the Springfield-Lakemore Branch from its small Lakemore Plaza location to the larger 11,229-square-foot building—designed to serve growing programming needs. Voter-approved funds from a 1-mill capital levy supported the purchase amid a districtwide effort to update library spaces. Akron.com
- ➤ Copley High School officials announced the inductees to the Athletic Hall of Fame including former student-athletes and award winners Larry Banner and Bob Smith. The celebration will take place during the weekend of Dec. 19 and 20—featuring a halftime recognition at the boys basketball game on Dec. 19 and a dinner ceremony at St. George Antiochian Church on Dec. 20. - ➤ On Oct 21, Summit County Council honored METRO RTA for receiving APTA’s Outstanding Public Transportation System of the Year award, with councilman Jeff Wilhite praising its safe and reliable service—such as turning a bus into a mobile shower and laundry room for the homeless. The council also discussed vacating a 400-foot section of Wyoga Lake Road in Boston Township and several county contracts that will be acted on soon. Akron.com
- ➤ At the Oct. 20 village council meeting, Mayor Richard Cole honored Springfield Lake Roller Rink's 55th anniversary by awarding a proclamation to owner Rosemary Neitz, who launched the business in 1970 with her late husband.
