COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Peninsula United Methodist Church is taking orders for its Election Day turkey dinner pickup on November 4—which includes turkey, homemade stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans with bacon, coleslaw, cranberry sauce and pie for $13.50 per meal, with several time slots available. The church urges customers to order early to ensure a preferred pickup time at 1574 Main St.  Akron Beacon Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new Ollie’s bargain store will open in Brunswick at Pearl Road in Hickory Ridge Plaza on Oct. 30. The grand opening will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:45 a.m. — the store promises big savings on everyday household products.  FOX 8
  • Eddy’s Bike Shop in Peninsula has wrapped up a strong comeback season eight months after a fire destroyed its original space by running bike rentals from a temporary site with better trail access and ample parking; today marks the last day for rentals. Owner Jimmy Ruggles said the shop will seek a permanent location as it ends its season—hoping to build on its rebound.  News 5 Cleveland
  • KeyBank opened its new branch at 379 S. Main St. in downtown Akron on Oct. 20 after moving from a site about a third of a mile away. The ADA-compliant branch operates from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday + its Oct. 22 grand opening featured a $10,000 donation by KeyBank Foundation to Fathers & Sons of Northeast Ohio to support responsible fatherhood.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Akron faces a tough decision over Firestone Plant No. 1 (a key link to its rubber history) as city leaders consider plans that may lead to its demolition. UA historians (Gregory S. Wilson and Kevin F. Kern) urge officials to preserve the plant’s clock tower to protect community heritage and avert loss of crucial state funds with a 60-day deadline looming.  Akron Beacon Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Akron natural gas customers in the city’s aggregation program with IGS Energy will pay 74 cents more per 1,000 cubic feet as rates rise from $3.81 to $4.55 starting in November for December billing+ residents and small businesses can opt out by Oct. 31 or join by calling the toll-free number, with the new rate fixed until October 2026.  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North High School students recorded pleas to save the GEAR UP program after it lost federal funding. Their messages call on decision makers to restore support for the program.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Student pilots from Kent State (Ohio State, Bowling Green, Western Michigan) competed in the Region III SAFECON competition at the Kent State University airport on Oct 22, where windy conditions made landing difficult. The event also featured a career fair with airline booths from Delta, Republic, American Airlines, Jet Blue and Vista America as teams explored aviation job opportunities.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, fall colors in much of Greater Akron are at or near peak while sunny skies and cool temperatures make this weekend ideal for viewing the vibrant leaves—patchy frost and brief showers are possible later.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Reporters covered Week 10 of Friday Football Frenzy at Holy Name High School yesterday — providing live on-field updates and key play highlights from the game.  Cleveland 19 News
  • Akron East won 12-8 over Buchtel on Oct 18 with senior Marlin Engram, linebacker Tarrell Robinson and junior Emmanuel Jefferson leading the play—a notable win since these three do not have Division I scholarship offers while other teammates received offers.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Browns are set to face the Patriots with tight end David Njoku listed as questionable with a knee injury—defensive tackle Adin Huntington remains in concussion protocol after practicing on Oct 24.
