GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Summit County gave a $250,000 grant to the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank to help feed 77,000 residents who rely on SNAP benefits—funds that will not be distributed on November 1 due to a government shutdown. County Executive Ilene Shapiro urged all 31 communities to help as food banks may not have enough resources if the shutdown continues.  WKYC
  • City officials in Akron said tests now show the water supply is back to normal after a July rise in haloacetic acid levels — recent checks recorded the best results in five years following changes by the Akron Water Supply Bureau. Mayor Shammas Malik thanked staff for their work, and customers were told they do not need to use bottled water or heed a boil water advisory.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new federal rule requires employers to pay $100,000 for each new H-1B visa petition and local health care providers and businesses worry that the fee will limit the supply of skilled international workers. Akron Children's and other institutions say the rule could deter international graduates needed for pediatric care — a change that may raise job costs and shrink services in both urban and rural areas.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Akron-area high schools invite residents to vote for standout athletes who shined last week in sports such as soccer, football, volleyball, and cross country. Votes close at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 — the winners will be announced Friday morning.  Akron Beacon Journal
