  • A looming government shutdown will cut off SNAP benefits starting Nov 1 and Akron-area food pantries are already facing longer lines as rising energy costs stress residents' budgets. Summit County Council approved $250,000 to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank to help serve nearly 77,000 people—community leaders urge officials to act quickly to prevent a food crisis.  Akron Beacon Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Akron President R.J. Nemer celebrated improvements in enrollment, retention, and finances during his State of the University address at the Akron Press Club on October 29th—he noted a 9.7% increase in first-year students and a 50% reduction in the deficit, and he launched the 'More Yes' campaign while outlining five priority areas for the next year including continued enrollment growth and campus beautification with no planned layoffs.  Signal Akron

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Akron city officials said water quality returned to normal after high HAA5 levels were detected in July—tests on Oct. 24 at 12 locations showed the best results in five years following upgrades to the water treatment process.  WKYC

  • Cleveland Clinic Akron General will host a free Baby Fair on Nov. 8 from noon to 3 p.m. at its Conference Center Auditorium—expecting mothers and caregivers can join educational sessions, facility tours and vendor booths with free parking and METRO Direct rides available.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Tom Moyer, a 64-year-old former Marine in care at Grace House Akron, celebrated prom night with his 21-year-old granddaughter Summer as donations provided a suit, dress and limousine for their special event—he said each moment mattered while he fought declining health.   • On January 1, 2026, Summa Health CEO Dr. Cliff Deveny will become emeritus CEO and strategic adviser while Daryl Tol, president of HATCo, serves as acting CEO—Summa will consider internal and external candidates for a permanent replacement with the hiring expected by mid-2026.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • On Oct. 28, the Akron Zips men’s and women’s basketball teams met with fans at Rhodes Arena to preview plans for the 2025-26 season.
