- ➤ Akron mother Jacqueline Gordon struggled to pay her $1,350 rent after her SNAP benefits dropped from $568 to $35 and November benefits were delayed by a federal shutdown—forcing her to rely on several food pantries to feed her family. - ➤ Mitchell Kahan — who led the Akron Art Museum for over 26 years and helped double its collection with a nearly $5 million endowment — died of heart failure in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 16 at age 74. - ➤ Jason Spodnik, the president of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, led the school to grow its enrollment to more than 1,200 students and expand its facilities over his ten-year tenure—he credited the dedicated staff who love Jesus and their work for the school’s success while noting that graduation days stand out as his best moments despite the challenges brought by COVID. - ➤ Akron City Council approved a $100,000 grant for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank yesterday to help residents during the SNAP freeze caused by the government shutdown. The funds will be given in two $50,000 installments+ if SNAP benefits resume, the city may alter the second payment. Akron Beacon Journal
- ➤ The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office is asking Akron residents for help locating any living relatives of Scott Thomas Archer, a 66 year old man who died from natural causes at his Mayflower Apartments on Oct. 28—residents with any information should call 330-643-2101. - ➤ Consumers in Akron will pay more for health insurance in 2025 as rising inflation and an aging population drive up premiums — and higher drug prices add to costs. - ➤ A local trauma surgeon said children across Northeast Ohio have been severely burned—and one has even died—while trying TikTok fire challenges, with many not telling their parents about the injuries.
