COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Akron veteran Johnnie Downs received the Order of St. Maurice medal this year for his long career preparing National Guard recruits for military service—he now spends his time guiding fellow veterans and supporting memorial projects that honor their legacy. ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Supreme Court declined on Monday to hear an appeal from two investor-owned utilities, letting stand a ruling that saves over 2 million Ohioans an estimated $400 million on electric bills by 2031. The decision directs federal regulators to reverse extra surcharges for roughly 3 million customers of FirstEnergy & Duke Energy, which may lead to refunds.  Signal Akron

HEALTH NEWS

  • Summit County Public Health inspected many food-serving locations in October and found several restaurants had six or more critical violations, with Oak and Embers Tavern in Hudson reporting eight issues — many of which were corrected during the inspection. The results could lead to stricter actions if unresolved problems persist.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron Children's Hospital has opened the Tom and Jill Zidian Family Autism Center to improve early diagnosis and care for children with autism—featuring sensory-friendly design, dedicated therapy rooms, and easy parking access made possible by a $2 million gift from the Zidans.  FOX 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Akron Aviators will host a food drive during their home game on Nov. 15 at Innes Community Learning Center—fans who donate a nonperishable food item can win prizes as the team partners with the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank and Anthem to support local food donations.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • On November 11, the Akron Zips and Kent State Golden Flashes played for the Wagon Wheel in Akron as live updates showed Kent State taking an early 7-3 lead after an 89-yard touchdown pass and Akron replying with a field goal and touchdown drive (a special teams mistake helped shape the first quarter). Akron entered as a 6½-point favorite after winning the past two meetings, while Kent State quarterback Dru DeShields returned following a hard hit.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Local high schools are holding a vote for the top Athlete of the Week (one girl and one boy) from Nov. 3-9. The poll is open until 5 p.m. Thursday (winners will be announced Friday morning).  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Dennis VanFossen Jr.—a former Soap Box Derby racer and UA grad—has been named the new CEO of the International Soap Box Derby and will immediately lead its youth racing and education programs.
