BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ajinomoto Health & Nutrition North America plans a $14.5 million expansion of its stocks, broths and sauces operations at 929 Home Ave in Akron's Chapel Hill—this project will add new capacity with updated equipment and an estimated 23 jobs. City officials are finalizing a development agreement to secure tax increment financing as part of the Commerce Park Drive Redevelopment Plan to improve the area around the business.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Photographer Robyn White in Northeast Ohio is providing Celebration of Life sessions that capture portraits of senior pets and their owners — a tribute to their lasting bonds. The sessions encourage owners to create keepsakes before their pets pass away.  WKYC
  • The Akron Children’s Holiday Tree Festival is a free nine-day event at the John S. Knight Center from Nov. 15 to 23 that raises funds for Akron Children's Hospital through sales of trees, wreaths, and holiday gifts—featuring themed displays, local music, and a visit from Santa. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dozens of college scholarships are available for Akron and Summit County high school students to help pay for college or job training as tuition costs keep rising. Local schools and community groups offer various awards with clear instructions on how to apply.  Signal Akron
  • A Jackson Township freshman, Aarit Koul (14), won the National Civics Bee Tuesday in Washington, D.C. and earned a $100,000 scholarship to help fund his college education and prepare for a career in law. TV host Mario Lopez presented the award during the national contest.  Cleveland 19 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio lawmakers passed House Bill 21 on November 12, which would allow tax deductions for monthly contributions to religious health care sharing ministries and exempt public university students from insurance requirements. Critics say these groups (such as Liberty HealthShare) do not offer all of the protections of traditional health insurance and have misled some consumers in the past.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Local bakeries in Akron are taking Thanksgiving dessert orders for pies, pumpkin rolls, and cakes with different deadlines and pickup dates. Gardner Pie Co. accepts phone orders until Nov. 18 for pickup on Nov. 25 and 26+ Vincent’s, West Side, Sweet Mary’s and Tiffany’s set their own deadlines and prices.  Akron Beacon Journal
