COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families in Summit County struggled during the government shutdown when SNAP benefits were cut, forcing many to rely on local food banks — partial benefits of up to 65 percent began on Nov. 12 while some still had not received assistance. Community groups and local agencies provided donations and support as recipients hoped for a full end to the shutdown.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Akron resident Kiesha Lawson said SNAP benefit changes have reduced the funds available for her family's food — she explained that the new rules have made it harder for her household to manage daily expenses.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron Children’s will host its 44th annual Holiday Tree Festival from Nov. 15 to Nov. 23 at the John S. Knight Center at 77 E. Mill St—visitors will see 153 decorated trees, 70 wreaths and 172 holiday gifts for sale while live music, a visit from Santa and breakfast events on Nov. 15 and 22 will help raise funds for the hospital. CULTURE NEWS

  • Summit Artspace invites local BIPOC+ artists from Summit County and nearby areas to apply for a funded exhibition in its Main Gallery that offers a $1,250 stipend for solo or small-group projects; the application is due Nov. 23, selected artists will be notified on Dec. 12, a public announcement will be made in January, and the exhibition will run April 2 until June 12, 2026.  Akron.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy visited Akron on Nov. 12 to warn that loneliness can lead to serious health issues—such as heart disease, stroke and dementia—and urged community members to strengthen connections through relationships, purpose and service.   • Restaurants and grocery stores in Akron are offering Thanksgiving meals for takeout and dine-in service with orders required days in advance—each location providing selections ranging from simple dinners for two to full family feasts.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • A historic farm in Green sold at auction on Nov. 12 for $3,103,638. The farm covers more than 27 acres and features a ranch home and barns — city officials have not yet received any development plans from the buyer.  FOX 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local high school football playoffs ended for Green and Manchester as Green lost 28—25 to Austintown Fitch and Manchester was defeated 28—14 by Girard. Other teams won their games with West Branch at 35—14, Walsh Jesuit 49—18, CVCA 42—7, and Hoban 38—0, with three teams set to host playoffs today at 7 p.m.  Akron.com
  • Akron-area athletic directors say NIL money will soon reach high school sports as the OHSAA prepares a bylaw referendum to be voted on from Nov 17–21—officials worry that private schools may gain an edge while athletes could face new recruiting pressures. The vote will offer schools a chance to set rules before NIL deals become widespread, and concerns remain about fairness and oversight.  Akron Beacon Journal
