COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bath residents are opposing plans to renovate and expand a barn at North Fork Preserve into a special-event space because they worry the change will disrupt the area's quiet style (neighbors express their concerns).  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Akron couple Allison and Rafael Rozo created two children’s books (Diego Fuego, released in July, and Unique Like Me, released in September) that mix personal experiences with bilingual storytelling to empower kids (featuring Spanish words with a glossary) and plan more projects celebrating Latino culture and creativity.  Cleveland.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Akron officials are adding more than 2,000 trees to the urban canopy this year. The city's tree plan planted 908 trees on street edges early in the spring and Project ACORN installed 258 neighborhood trees while crews plan to plant 900 more trees today — efforts that bring needed shade and cleaner air.  Signal Akron

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Akron City Council approved on Nov. 17 a $79 million plan to rebuild Pfeiffer Elementary and Miller South into one combined K-8 and middle school at the former Kenmore High School site, with a community meeting scheduled for Jan. 14 at the Kenmore Community Center for updates. The council also allowed a plan for Circle K to develop the former CVS site at 786 Brittain Rd into a gas station and convenience store with a new green space out front.  Akron Beacon Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The four Ohio high school football playoff games for Summit County-area teams are set for Friday, Nov. 21, with the Division II match at Bedford's Bearcat Stadium featuring Hoban (10-1) against Walsh Jesuit (10-1). Games kick off at 7 p.m. as teams compete to advance to state semifinals.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron-area voters will choose the top high school golfers and cross country runners through a poll open until 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, with winners announced Friday morning on BeaconJournal.com. The list features athletes’ performance stats from several local schools—voters can compare their credentials before casting a vote.  Akron Beacon Journal
