COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Crews broke ground in Brecksville for next year’s FOX 8 St. Jude Dream Home yesterday, marking 14 years of FOX 8’s partnership with St. Jude Children’s Hospital—tickets for the 2026 event will go on sale Feb. 19 at 6 a.m. at $100 each.  FOX 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday evening, Kofi Boakye’s Beyond The Keys youth program shared his inspiring journey of overcoming hardship—and he awarded the inaugural Elevating Possibility Scholarship to several high school seniors at Buchtel Community Learning Center during the 13th Annual Harvest Festival. Akron native and Cleveland Cavaliers star Larry Nance Jr. helped make the award possible to encourage students to pursue their dreams.  News 5 Cleveland
  • At the November 17 meeting, Akron City Council approved a conditional-use permit for a new two-story school building on the former Kenmore High School site that will combine Pfeiffer and Miller South schools—construction is set to begin next spring with a groundbreaking planned in mid-March and an opening scheduled for August.  Akron.com

  • Summit County dedicated its first Safe Haven Baby Box on Thursday afternoon at Stow Fire Station #2 on Hudson Dr; the secure, temperature-controlled device (Ohio’s 21st) lets parents surrender newborns without facing charges.  Cleveland 19 News
  • At a Summit County Council meeting on November 17, Cassandra Galloway was welcomed as the new CEO of Child Guidance and Family Solutions and said she will focus on expanding mental health treatment and prevention services, including a new location in Green opening in February or March. Council members also discussed a proposed amendment to public records requests for police body camera footage that could raise fees—sparking debate over potential costs for vulnerable individuals.  Akron.com

  • Akron native Tracy Carter was chosen as the first president and CEO of the new Trailhead Community Health Foundation, which was formed with proceeds from the Summa Health sale—she will build the foundation's infrastructure and partnerships to improve health across five counties.  Signal Akron
  • The Tom and Jill Zidian Family Autism Center opened on November 11 at Akron Children’s and offers family-centered services for children, teens, and young adults with autism spectrum disorder. Patient families helped design the space by suggesting reading cubbies and soft colors—features that create an accessible, sensory friendly environment.  Akron.com
  • Akron resident Melissa Derrig—who never smoked—has been diagnosed with lung cancer linked to radon exposure, and she is now sharing her experience.  Akron Beacon Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The OHSAA announced bracket pairings for football state semifinals that will be played on November 28 at 7 p.m. in various divisions. Regional finals are happening today and state championships will be held in December at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton—geography drives the matchups rather than teams’ records.  FOX 8
  • Local high school teams advanced in the regional playoffs—CVCA beat Akron East 30-0 with a 24-0 halftime lead and 236 rushing yards to earn a matchup against Villa Angela-St. Joseph today at 7 p.m. at Twinsburg High School. Hoban beat Hudson 35-3 with strong running plays and will face Walsh Jesuit today at 7 p.m. at Bedford High School, while Walsh Jesuit also defeated Austintown Fitch 42-21.  Akron.com
  • The Manchester Junior High Tennis Club finished its season—10 players competed in matches against teams from Lake, Chippewa, Canton McKinley and Canton South—and coach Richard Burris with assistant Julie Kish noted the players grew in skill and confidence on the court.  Akron.com
