Good morning, Akron. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 22nd of November.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA said nearly 82 million Americans will travel over 50 miles for Thanksgiving with most driving for safety and cost reasons amid potential flight cancellations — the Akron-Canton Airport is set to handle 24 direct flights with TSA on standby. Travelers are advised to leave early to avoid heavy traffic on Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday and Monday.  News 5 Cleveland

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Samantha Zaczyk, an optometrist at Northeast Ohio Eye Surgeons, supports Senate Bill 36 (Primary Eye Care Modernization Bill) that would let optometrists perform three simple laser treatments and remove small, harmless eyelid bumps without needing a referral to an ophthalmologist. The bill would reduce patient delays and lower costs by extending care already taught in optometry programs, as seen in 24 states.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A free dental care clinic will provide no-cost services for Akron residents this weekend—official details on location and hours have not been released.  Cleveland 19 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Andy O'Keefe, a math teacher who previously coached the CVCA girls basketball team to a 137-65 record, makes his debut as the Stow-Munroe Falls girls basketball head coach today — replacing longtime coach Bob Podges. He will lead the team in their season-opening home game against Canfield at 1 p.m. — a key start to the 2025-26 season.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Archbishop Hoban and Walsh Jesuit, both with records of 10 to 1, met last Friday in the OHSAA playoff game at Bedford Bearcat Stadium where Walsh Jesuit built a lead of 14 to 7 in the second quarter. The winner will advance to the state semifinals on November 28 to face either Highland or Avon.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Highland and Avon are playing in the Division II, Region 6 final at Brunswick High School today for a state final four spot — Avon leads 14—6 in the second quarter. This is their third playoff meeting and Avon won the last two games while Highland won in 2013 — the contest is very important for both teams.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Yesterday, Akron-area high school teams competed in OHSAA regional final playoff games as five teams sought to move three wins closer to a state title — matchups in Divisions II, III, and VII highlighted the postseason push, and state semifinal sites will be announced on November 23.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Ohio sports leagues and betting operators are reexamining rules after scandals involving MLB and NBA players led MLB to cap pitch-level bets at $200. Gov. Mike DeWine and lawmakers plan to review further changes—possibly banning micro prop bets—to keep sports betting fair.  News 5 Cleveland
