COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Several community organizations are planning holiday events that offer chances to join local celebrations and contribute to charitable causes. Gennesaret Inc.'s Home Run for the Homeless will take place on Thanksgiving Day at 419 W. Exchange St. in Akron with 1-mile and 4-mile runs starting at 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. in person & online, while the Main Street Kent Holiday 5K on Dec.6 at Bell Tower Brewing, the Stark Library Foundation Holiday Home Tour on Dec.6–7, the Sugar Plum Tour of Holiday Homes on Dec.7 with a virtual option from Dec.13 to Jan.4, & the Women’s Endowment Fund celebration on March 26 at Quaker Station complete the schedule.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • On November 18th, the Salvation Army in Ravenna began sorting toys donated throughout the year+ Major Paul Knickerbocker and his daughters, Katelyn and Jerica, helped with the effort as the organization prepared for the holiday season.  Akron Beacon Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Studio Exchange, a new dance club at 1 W. Exchange St., will open on Thanksgiving Eve at 6 p.m. with a soft opening drag show and will host live acts including RuPaul’s Drag Race stars and a Fleetwood Mac cover band throughout the holiday weekend. The club features a 16-by-14-foot light-up disco dance floor—surrounded by booth seating and high-top tables—while promising a safe, inclusive space with weekend security and a new kitchen arriving on Dec. 2.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron-based FirstEnergy must refund nearly $180 million to customers over three billing cycles starting in December; a spokesperson said the company is reviewing the PUCO order and that refund calculations will be filed by November 26. More details on the credit amounts, which may include around $30 per bill plus extra fee credits (depending on usage), will be shared before Thanksgiving.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Northeast Ohio will host many live holiday shows this season, with plays, ballets, and concerts scheduled in local theaters from November through December. Family audiences can enjoy productions like The Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol, and TubaChristmas events in venues across Akron and Cleveland.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Northeast Ohio will host a series of holiday events from the Holiday Tree Festival at the John S. Knight Center in Akron through a festive Holiday Parade on Nov. 28, Deck the Hall at Stan Hywet Hall, Wild Lights at the Akron Zoo, and family shows like The Nutcracker Ballet in Lakewood and Trans-Siberian Orchestra performances at Rocket Arena—other gatherings in Kent, Hudson and nearby areas will round out the season until Dec. 31.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Dec. 1, state Route 8 traffic in Akron will change as all northbound lanes shift to a new southbound bridge — three ramps will close with detours set until late fall, 2027. The Ohio Department of Transportation said the $158 million bridge project will finish in summer 2028.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Lieutenant Aaron Bober died Friday after a medical emergency in Sheffield Village — the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the loss and sent condolences to his family and colleagues.  FOX 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Walsh Jesuit won the Division II, Region 5 football championship by beating Hoban 35-7 at Bedford Bearcat Stadium on Nov. 21 — senior running back Marty Tobin ran for 199 yards and two touchdowns. The win reversed a regular-season loss and moved the team to a state semifinal where they will face Avon on Nov. 28 at InfoCision Stadium.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Two Akron-area high school football teams—Walsh Jesuit and CVCA—advanced to the state semifinals in the Ohio playoffs. Walsh Jesuit will face Avon in Division II—marking their first state semifinal matchup—while CVCA will play Toledo Central Catholic on Friday, November 28.  Akron Beacon Journal
