COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Akron organizations are seeking volunteers to help with projects such as mentoring youth, planting trees, sorting food boxes, and guiding zoo visitors—opportunities that provide hands-on support to local families, students and animals.  Signal Akron
  • Snow falls today and will continue across Summit and Portage counties, offering 11 free sledding spots in Greater Akron—ranging from Bath Nature Preserve to Cranberry Creek Park—for families to enjoy outdoor fun while the snowfall lasts.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • On December 1, the 31st Angel Tree ceremony was held at the Akron-Summit County Public Library to honor over 1,500 victims, including 24-year-old Ontario Bradley who was shot in Goodyear Heights, with Victim Assistance Program providing support + community leaders delivering remarks.  Akron Beacon Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Slovak J Club has preserved Akron’s Slovak heritage by hosting monthly dinners, weekly fish fries and bowling nights at 485 Morgan Ave. The club—originally a fraternal organization—now offers a welcoming space that connects past traditions with today’s local community.  Signal Akron

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Dec 2, heavy snow fell over parts of Kent and Tallmadge and added a wintry touch to local holiday decor—an 11-year-old slid down a hill at Davey elementary as kids enjoyed the fun. The snowfall marked the strongest of the season so far and boosted community outdoor activities.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Summit County declared a Level 2 snow emergency on Dec. 2 to warn drivers about snowy, icy roads that led to school closures and reduced visibility until 7 p.m. The county sheriffs issued the order—urging residents to drive only if absolutely necessary for safety.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Ohio State Highway Patrol began an end-of-year blitz today to help drivers buckle up—follow speed limits and avoid distractions—and keep roads safer. The move comes after 11 traffic deaths over Thanksgiving and state numbers that are close to last year’s.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Akron will end its 200th celebration on Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at Perkins Square on the Akron Children's Hospital campus; Mayor Shammas Malik will reveal a new city logo and residents can submit items (letters, essays, photos) for a time capsule to be opened in 2050, with the event moving indoors if the weather is bad.  Akron Beacon Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jilliane Pugh opened Embrace Pink in Stow to offer specialized care products and services for women fighting breast cancer. The store—located at 3274 Kent Road, Suite 103—provides personalized fittings, exercises, and plans while Pugh prepares to launch a nonprofit in January to further aid patients.  Akron Beacon Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Four Akron high school sports leagues will change their membership in the 2026-27 school year. The Metro Athletic Conference will add Cuyahoga Falls, Kent Roosevelt, and Tallmadge — losing Coventry — while Coventry joins the Principals Athletic Conference and the Suburban League realigns its football conferences, with the City Series, Federal League, and North Coast Conference staying the same.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • The Akron-area high school football vote is open for choosing the top offensive and defensive players from nominees across schools such as Hoban, Wadsworth, and Mogadore. The poll accepts votes until 5 p.m. Dec 4 + winners will be announced Friday morning.  Akron Beacon Journal
