  • On Dec. 12 at 6:02 a.m., Epiphany Mushroom repurposed a former church on South Main Street into a lab to grow a dozen mushroom varieties in bags of soy hulls and sawdust. Founded by Erik and Stacey Vaughn, the business sells 50 pounds of mushrooms daily to local eateries.  Akron Beacon Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Wayne County man won a $1 million prize in the Ohio Lottery when a $20 ticket purchased at a Circle K in Barberton on Dec. 12 turned into a win. He opted for the $500,000 cash option and received $364,375 after taxes.  Akron Beacon Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Akron faces a winter advisory from 1 p.m. today to 7 a.m. Monday as temperatures drop to near 10°F with 2 to 5 inches of snow; the City activated warming centers for shelter, food, and clothing, and residents can check the 311 app+METRO RTA is offering free rides until 2025.  Signal Akron
  • ODOT crews are set to clear snow and salt roads this weekend as winter weather is forecast for Northeast Ohio, with 70 plow trucks ready in Lake, Geauga and Cuyahoga counties. Motorists are advised to remain two to three car lengths ahead of plows — a measure to ease traffic during the storm.  WKYC

  • The Women of Ironman wrestling tournament returns to Walsh Jesuit today — top female wrestlers from local and other Ohio schools begin with quarterfinals at 2 p.m. and the action continues tomorrow with semifinals and title matches.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Walsh Jesuit high school wrestling coach Dave Mariola Jr. said his many years at the Ironman tournament show why it remains one of the nation’s top competitions. He detailed his reasons during a local interview.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Girls high school wrestlers from around the nation will compete at the third annual Women of Ironman wrestling tournament at Walsh Jesuit today and tomorrow. The invitation-only event has grown in prestige as it offers competitors a chance to boost their seasonal standing.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Hudson basketball player Anna Anzevino and Revere wrestling star Mason Massouh were named Akron-Area Athletes of the Week for Dec. 1-7 after receiving 61.36% and 52.38% of votes from 9,151 ballots. The winners were announced Dec. 12, 2025.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Greater Akron’s girls cross country season in the 2025 OHSAA meet ended successfully with Woodridge, Wadsworth, and Hudson earning top-five team finishes (with runners like Maggie Gerschutz earning All-Ohio honors at 10th place).  Akron Beacon Journal

  • The 80-year-old Norton Raceway Park, formerly Barberton Speedway, was sold Friday, Dec. 12 — owners cited costly repairs and weak weekly asphalt racing as reasons. Its future depends on leasing terms with the new, undisclosed owner.  Akron Beacon Journal
