COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Green Local Association Support Staff collected 3,600 food items from bus riders and parents during a food drive held Dec.15-19. The team sorted the items and four buses distributed them at Avon Park/Dollar General parking lot, Briarwood Estates, Arlington Ridge Townhomes and Extended Stay America on Dec.22.  Akron.com
  • At Sir Troy’s Toy Kingdom in Canton, a Newcomerstown couple has launched a holiday drive to collect Lego sets in memory of their late son. They will donate the sets to Akron Children’s Hospital in February (drive ends Dec. 31) as Stark County residents are invited to contribute.  News 5 Cleveland

  • D-A Specialty Co. Inc., a longtime family supplier for Akron restaurants and hotels since 1935, celebrated 90 years when the Mayor’s office presented a proclamation on Dec. 15 at its location (589 Wolf Ledges Parkway) while family representatives highlighted their enduring commitment to the community.  Akron.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Akron received two truckloads of Christmas decorations donated by GE Lighting from East Cleveland after its century-long display ended; the items include a large gingerbread house, reindeer and a rare tree topper (made in 2005) now shown at Lock 3 and Lock 4 (more treasures may come).  Akron Beacon Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildlife is making a comeback across Ohio in 2025, with black bears reappearing near Pataskala, fishers seen near Cleveland, bobcats spotted at a nature preserve, and bald eagles nesting near Lake Erie and across Lorain and Huron counties.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the United Kingdom’s Dartmoor National Park became sister parks in 2024 through a five-year partnership that supports environmental education and conservation. The collaboration has led to exchange trips and sparked ideas to adapt Dartmoor’s artisan trail concept in the valley.  Signal Akron

HEALTH NEWS

  • Colleges in the area are reexamining their mental health services as federal pandemic funds have ended; many are forming partnerships with local providers to keep support available.   • Onyx, a dog in a Northeast Ohio shelter for 7 years, was adopted by a *local business owner* who works with the shelter. The adoption gives hope to others waiting for their forever home.  Cleveland 19 News
  • Papa Joe’s Iacomini’s in Merriman Valley will host a Champagne dinner (priced at $175) on Jan. 24 to feature a curated selection of French Champagne like Dom Perignon and Laurent-Perrier, with co-owner Jeff Bruno explaining each bubbly’s historic backstory.
