COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Square Records in Highland Square — a popular record store known for its curated music selection — closed on Saturday, Dec. 28 due to a medical issue after nearly 25 years in business. Local patrons said they were saddened by the loss and hope the store may return in some form.  News 5 Cleveland
  • Akron Children's Hospital's final Women's Board Charity Ball was held Dec. 27 at Todaro’s in Merriman Valley — ending a 122-year tradition that raised $17 million. The board has shifted focus to other fundraisers like the Holiday Tree Festival to support hospital needs.  Akron Beacon Journal
  • Shelter Care, a nonprofit serving youth in Summit County, will use its $2,000 Millennium Fund grant to provide safety kits for teen moms leaving Highlands Teen Pregnancy Shelter in Tallmadge; the kits include a fire extinguisher & first aid kit to help ensure a safe home environment.  Akron Beacon Journal

  • Athletes from Coventry and Firestone high schools were named Akron-Area Athletes of the Week for Dec. 15 to 21. Sarah Schueler, a Firestone swimmer with 57.16% of 14,905 votes, and Dalton Keith, a Coventry wrestler with 44.88% of the votes, will be featured on beaconjournal.com next Tuesday.  Akron Beacon Journal
